facebookopoly
Happy weekend! etc.
I know it's too late to start the countdown, but only 12 more weeks to go until I don't have to think about homework again! (until january)
So I've heard other people write about how their mom or dad or brother or sister or such joined the social networking site they were also a member of and things got weird. Well I've found a bunch of cousins on facebook over the months, and lately, they've been getting older and older until I found some aunts and uncles, and even a great aunt. Now, maybe it's not just me, but it feels a little creepy for someone over 70 to be on facebook. Maybe you want to keep in touch with your friends, sure, but, when your only friends on there are your children and grandchildren; that might just be borderline stalking.
<< second attempt | Main | alcatraz >> 04:01 PM by RobI was talking to the mother about the raccoons having pulled up the sod in the backyard for perhaps the 13th time since we laid it in may, when i mentioned this to her (after she mentioned, having seen the photoblog shots I have posted on my bedroom wall, that neither she nor I are in any of them,) she concluded that it was time for her to join facebook.
After all, "I have friends I want to keep in touch with too!" she noted.
"You just don't do that. It's weird when parents join facebook."
"Deanne and Rich said they were keeping track of you kids. She said, 'Robert is sure growing up to be handsome!'"
"But they're my cousins, so it's okay for them. I have other people like Carmelle and Julia and the Taylor girls,"
"I like keeping track of people! I never have time to talk to all of them, so if there's a way for me to see what they're up to, I want to be able to use it."
"Well then facebook would be perfect for you," I conceded,
Weird. She still struggles with using a mouse, so maybe getting on facebook could finally be a way to teach my post-middle aged mother how to comfortably use a computer?
It's sort of neat how hugely popular the site has become in Vancouver, and everywhere else really. It's like the 21st century whitepages... only with a lot more info than just a telephone number. I was talking to a classmate about it the other day - about how a year ago I would never have posted someone's photo online without asking permission. But now? It's like a game, trying to take someone's photo so you can upload it and tag them on facebook. No, it's not like a game, because a few friends and I last year actually decided we would play some phototag when we were on campus and post the results on facebook. (I totally won cause I got a shot of one of the guys as he was driving to campus in the car in front of me)
I wonder when facebook will sell out to cable and cell companies, and online shopping, and banks, and everything else people deal with, so we'll no longer have to contact separate companies for everything. We can pay for dinner with our facebook password. Need gas? no problem, just make sure you have the gasPay app, and swipe your fB ccard in the pump.
Crazy.
Hey Rob...
I was on facebook for a week, it was too much for me. Although hubby finds it a totally must have experience. I communicate with my blog, and that works for me I guess. You made a comment about older folks on Facebook, and we have chatted about that issue. For some it is alright, I'd rather blog "live time" than play beekaboo and poke-me!!
Cheerio
Jeremy
